Second week at LIFT!
Our work experience student Abid Rahman talks about his final week at LIFT
Second week @ LIFT!
So what’s new, what’s old, what have you missed from the time I stopped writing and got the ‘Life at LIFT' blog posted…hmm well waking up to the Monday morning weather wasn’t too hard I guess, wasn’t expecting it to be so bright …maybe the weather knew it was my last week working at LIFT so the sun decided to shine and give me a break, how flattering. Good thing it did but coming to the office was harder than the 1st week with the sun beating on my back like as if it were a solar panel! The journey was all worthwhile having entered the office with warm greetings from Kate and Beki and with Erica being away for the 1st week, was looking forward to seeing her again for the 1st time after my interview, she came into the office with what seemed like the biggest smile I probably ever seen and in an instant, was bombarded with greetings and eagerly awaited questions to be answered about her holiday.
The day went on with the sun still shining bright as ever and finally got started on the store room…looked like it needed a lot of work done to it, but having finished, I was happy with the results and I think so was everyone else.
Tuesday morning began with a phone call from the most little unexpected person … my art teacher! She told me she was coming to visit me at work. For some what reason, I decided to wear a suit to work that day, maybe to look smart, or just got the feeling that it was ‘wear a suit day’. Wasn’t a very good idea though, it was very uncomfortable and wasn’t exactly suitable clothing for a day where I had to clean out the store room. Anyways, I was surprised how clean and how much room the store room had after being sorted out, it was Emilie’s 1st time seeing it and she was delighted to feel the space around her!
On Tuesday they have staff meeting- couldn’t believe how long the meeting was actually, I managed to go out, enjoy the fresh air, have my lunch, walk back, enjoy more of the fresh air and find the meeting still in progress. Overall, from the few minutes I was in the meeting, I learnt a lot about what was happening and inferred the skills to chair a meeting.
I looked very forward to the meeting with ‘Them’-‘Them’ are a group of creative individuals who are specialised in design and have created many pieces of work. As usual something had to happen to Emilie on the way, funny enough she got stuck on a train (northern line) to old street which we (Kevin, Pete, Margred and me) were meant to board but apparently ‘too slow’! The ‘Them’ office was amazing, looked like an attic but really nice. The meeting was with Rosa and Dan who seemed very cool and very good at editing photos and stuff. The meeting was about the launch- Mark’s (artistic director) video; the venue design and print. In the meeting, I got talking to Dan, asked him about himself and his job, told him about myself and my future goals and having talked to him, I realised a hidden interest in a career in art and photography. I enjoyed being in the meeting, and understood a lot of it.
Then came today, 3 March 2010, had a science exam for an hour but never mind that. Onto the more important things, here I am writing this blog and thinking about what to write next but running out of ideas with a headache giving me the writers block…I’ll most likely have to update this tomorrow or whenever, but I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it!
Thursday 4th March...was the day I get to go to Southbank Centre to watch ‘All Natural’ by Kate McIntosh! I have been looking forward to this day since the beginning of the week...today I had to do a lot of filing work, was hard to organise the files and sort them out the way I wanted to but devotion to a good end result was my way. We left approximately 6:15pm for Southbank, and went into the Purcell Room to watch our show. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, so weird I can’t even describe it in words how I feel about it...but it is something I recommend (if your 15 and over). I enjoyed that evening with Pete and Erica; we hung out for a bit after the show but somehow I managed to lose my hat which was the really annoying part. Erica and Pete walked me to the bridge which led to embankment station, said my last goodbye and walked off heading home.
LAST DAY!
Was the day I was hoping that would just take its time to come around...had a really squeamish feeling coming in today, only because of the thought of having to leave. On my last day of work, I did invoices, a lot of them...make Kate’s job easier.
Something that I forgot that I was going to Strand today for a meeting with Nick and Anna from Improbable. Nick and Anna seemed like great people and the meeting was really interesting as it involved money and budgeting, something I’m interested in as I want to open my own physiotherapy 1 day hopefully!
Coming back to the LIFT office, I reflected on the past 2 weeks and how everything I went through, everyone I met and that once in a lifetime experience...how it all affected me and changed me. I think I was the most fortunate, lucky and happiest employee to have been working at such a wonderful place like LIFT where every day is just another chance to make everyone smile. LIFT taught me what it meant to be independent, value of individuality and more importantly, LIFT helped me realise and find out who I am and how to express myself. At the beginning of the working week, I thought that the office where you work in is the most important thing, but after the 2 weeks, I opened my eyes to the treasures within the vault. Where you work doesn’t really matter, it’s who you work with and how you work with them. The LIFT staffs are all so amazing, unique, special and individuals who without, LIFT wouldn’t be how it is today. They say that LIFT is a charity that is specialised in theatre festivals; and I think LIFT is every individual that strives and perseveres for a good outcome of the atmosphere they create in the office. I thank LIFT from the bottom of my heart for everything they have shown and done for me, for I think they are the reason for the better person I am today.
