Hamid Pourazari
As part of LIFT’s commitment to presenting Middle Eastern work to develop community relations here in London, we have commissioned Iranian theatre director Hamid Pourazari to come to the UK and work with people from London’s Farsi speaking community.
As part of LIFT’s 2012 programme the Iranian director, Hamid Poorazari, has been commissioned to travel to the UK to create a piece of theatre. Hamid’s first visit will happen at the end of June, during which he will get acquainted with London and meet with members of the resident Farsi speaking community to hear their stories of their life in London. Based on his meetings and experiences in London Hamid will then return to Iran to begin the process of developing a unique piece of theatre for the 2012 programme.
Hamid’s previous work includes traditional and comtemporary Iranian theatre and adaptations of Western plays, from Shakespeare to Goldoni. One of his most recent projects was a production based upon Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle performed with a cast of 85 Afghan refugees in Tehran.
What I witnessed was a brilliant, exciting and compelling performance that was a moving reminder of the power of theatre to give voice to people on the margins of society.
